Administration Center
Understanding...
  • The content in the center of the admin panel home page
  • The navigation links on either the top of side of every admin page

The main content
When you first open your forum's Administration Center, you will see a welcome page. Here you will see the following items at the center of the page:

[vers=2]Quick Search
In the Quick Search box you can type in keywords to search for a few different things that make it easier to find certain things on your forum. There is a selection box to the right of the keyword input box where you can select what type of search you want to perform. The current options include searching a task or setting in your admin panel, searching for a member registered on your forum, and even searching the SMF Online Manual. For more information on using the search feature in your administration panel, see this document for Searching the Admin Panel.[/vers]

Current News from SMF - "Live from Simple Machines..."
This box located in the center of the admin panel shows a news feed that is taken directly from the Simple Machines website that shows all the relevant latest news regarding SMF. They are all in a brief summary format, but each news item's title links to a topic that goes into much more detail about the news item. You can also see the date the news item was originally posted next to each item's title to see what news is recent and what news is old.

Support Information
Shown in the Support Information box located to the right of the news box, are the following things: the current version of SMF, along with the current SMF version that you are using on your Forum, which includes a link underneath it called (more detailed) for you to check each of your forum files' SMF version number so you can see if each file is up to date with the current version of SMF. Also found in the Support Information box is a list of all of the Administrators of your forum.

Quick Links
You will also find links to some of the more important admin pages (which can also be accessed to in the menu on the left) toward the bottom of the page, below the Live from Simple Machines... and Support Information boxes. Each of these links go to an important section, and include a description of what can be done in the section.

You can return to this page at any time by clicking Administration Center at the very top of the menu located on the left of every admin page.

The navigation links
Additionally, on every admin panel page, you will see navigation links on either the left side or at the top of every page of your administration panel. These links include the Quick Links mentioned on the Administration Panel main page, but also include links to every section of the admin panel. [vers=2]You can toggle the option to view the navigation links in a box-styled list on the side, or a dropdown-styled menu on the top in two ways:
  • Navigate to Features and Options and have the setting Use a sidebar instead of dropdown-menu for admin section checked.
  • Click the double area icon () and () located next to each menu on any page of your admin panel.
[/vers]

Alternatively, the Admin section on the Online Manual is currently modeled directly off of how the admin panel on your forum is.

I have no "ADMIN" button in the main menu located at the top of the forum!  :-\ What can I do?

Please make sure you are logged in to the forum, and are logged into the administrator account :).

If that fails add ?action=admin after the index.php part of your url like so:

www.yourdomain.com/index.php?action=admin

raydlee_msc made the following comment on October 17, 2008, 11:21:52 AM:

Be VERY Careful with Server Settings as loading the server settings page pulls in the board loginid into the dbname field and if saved will render the whole app inoperative.

This is a serious bug that needs fixing.

Instead, the server settings page should read the dbname from the dbname field of the settings.php file so that when it is saved, the board remains operative.

It is possible that in some cases the administrator's id can be used as a suggestion, but once a successful connection is made to the database, then the dbname should be locked in and never altered - maybe a security.php file for this information so that settings can be changed to the look and feel, without worrying about the db connection??

Jade made the following comment on October 17, 2008, 06:13:30 PM:

If you don't change the database username and password it should be the correct one. If you have errors regarding this then you should have it looked at. The database username and password are stored int he settings.php file in your forum root.

Is there somewhere in the admin section that logs Admin actions? Am attempting to find out which admin did what.

Jade made the following comment on January 09, 2009, 08:29:16 AM:

There is a moderation log. 2.0 has an administration log too, so if you have 2.0 then yes :).
