Uploading SMF
Steps for Installing SMF:
  • Check Client Requirements
  • Check Server Requirements
  • Check Server Recommendations
  • Obtain SMF
  • Upload SMF
  • Run the SMF installer
  • Using Webinstall

You should now be at the stage where you can upload the SMF files to your server. Initiate an FTP connection to the server and create a directory on the server. You can name the directory anything you like but "smf" or "forum" is a good choice.

Now you want to upload the SMF files to the directory you just created, so navigate to that directory in your FTP program and open the folder where you unzipped the SMF package on your computer. Select all the files and folders and copy them and paste (or drag depending on client) them in your FTP program. The files should now be uploading, and depending on the speed of your internet connection, this may take some time. For more information on using an FTP program, view this document - How do I use FTP? / What is FTP?

After uploading the files, go to http://www.yourdomain.tfl/smf/install.php (or the directory name you choose). If the first page comes up with a dialog requesting FTP information this is because you are running on a Unix-like server. At this stage, just enter in your FTP details and the install program will attempt to set permissions on your server accordingly. If, however, you wish to do this manually or this initial step fails simply connect to your server with your FTP client and change the permissions on the following files and directories to 777*. On most client software, this is achieved by right clicking on the files you wish to change, and going to Properties, CHMOD, or Permissions, and then typing in the number.

The following files and folders should be CHMOD'ed to 777*:

  • attachments
  • avatars
  • Packages
  • Packages/installed.list
  • Smileys
  • Themes
  • Themes/default/languages/Install.english.php
  • agreement.txt
  • Settings.php
  • Settings_bak.php
  • install.php

* If your host does not allow 777 permissions please try 755

here is a link that shows you how to do this ( everything is simple if you know how to do it!)

Hello,
First of all - I am a newbie at creating a forum and websites

I have a problem getting SMF to install. I have followed as best I can, the instructions you set out. So far,  I have uploaded SMF files to my domain ftp and placed them in the /public_html directory in a folder called /forum.
BUT - when I then point my browser to:  www.mysite.com/public_html/forum/install.php ...I get the soul destroying message 'Not found' - this message also refers to 404 and such like  ::)

After hours of searching for a reason, it may appear that either I need a Mysql DB already setup or ch mod some files or edit a config file or... Plz help, what must i do or what am i doing wrong ?? I'm almost ready to forget the whole idea of creating a forum.

Hey Mbarns :)

You do not include the "public_html" in the url, that is the directory where you place your files so that people on the web can view them. Just go to www.mysite.com/forum or www.mysite.com/forum/install.php :)

Kuahara made the following comment on August 23, 2008, 01:55:22 AM:

For security reasons, I'd recommend CHMODing those to 755, not 777.

SQL injection attacks are rampant right now with these botnet servers infecting random sites and visitors to your site... until I banned a list of about 20 botnet / malicious ASPROX servers from connecting to mine, I managed to get hit with 2 separate SQL injection attacks that added redirect scripts to various index and php files within my shared hosting server.  I wasn't even aware of the attack until I received the warning in FireFox 3 that there was a google advisory out on my site claiming that it was a reported attack site.

CHMODing 755 is just one of the many security steps users should take in securing their site if 777 is not absolutely necessary.

I have uploaded all files and got them in my public _html but if you go to my site [link removed] you get the index list not the forum l am trying to get up :) how do l get rid of the index page and get my forum to work instead could anyone help me please?!

Quote
Jade made the following comment on September 28, 2008, 11:30:16 PM:

What you have done is uploaded the SMF install folder, you need to upload the contents of that folder instead of the actual folder, to your public_html folder :D.

Jade made the following comment on September 29, 2008, 08:12:52 AM:

Uploading the SMF install package to the root should include an "index.php" file, which should pop up and make you install SMF when you next visit your site. If it does not, check your files for the file. If it's there and not working properly you might need to contact your host.

Each time you visit the site it will be using that index.php file, whether it's visible in the URL or not :).

Maybe you uploaded to the wrong folder?

It won't be in "public_html/" because the "public_html" folder is the actual site :).

What's the name of the folder you uploaded to?

Hi,
I've uploaded the package, changed all the files to be writable, but I still can't get past the first page ... (ftp connect / or where it tells you which files need to be writeable.)

Any ideas???

Thanks
Jacquie

Jade made the following comment on November 06, 2008, 08:16:36 PM:

Sometimes FTP only makes the folders writeable, not the files. Ensure that the permissions you set went to the files and directories too :D.

If that fails, just CHMOD all of your files and folders, an FTP client will be able to do this quickly and easily for you :).

You need to CHMOD your files through FTP :)

CHMOD files through FTP
Using a control panel or FTP client, file permissions can be changed quickly and easily. Usually, FTP programs will allow permissions to be changed by right clicking files/directories and selecting properties, attributes or permissions. The desired numerical value can be entered, or if provided, checkboxes can be changed. For more information on FTP, see how do I use FTP? / what is FTP?

I am trying to get to the next step but am stuck here.  I get a screen asking me for my FTP info.  I put in my regular username and password that I use when I ftp and I get the error:

Unable to connect to FTP server with this combination of details.
530 Login incorrect.

I usually just upload webpages and stuff so I am out of my depth here.  I have triple checked the username and password.  The port is the same number I use:21.  The default for the "server" name on this form is localhost--when I log in using my ftp software I put my domain name in this field.  I tried this and it doesn't work either.

Any suggestions?

I used Smart FTP to CHMOD my files but when I tried the install again it said that I still needed to.  So I clicked where it said "Click here to test if these files are writable again." and it just reloads the page!! A little help?

Quote
Jade made the following comment on November 29, 2008, 05:20:09 PM:

Your server wont let you CHMOD with the script.

SmartFTP will need to CHMOD files and folders, recursively (all levels) if you just did what I think you did..

I use FileZilla and it works fine for me :D

Yes. Please ensure you are uploading in BINARY. ASCII transfers like to cut SMF files in half, so ensure you are uploading in Binary :).

I know this from my FileZilla, which couldnt upload whole files in ASCII.

okay - sorry to repeat a question thats been asked a hundred times already but i'm stuck... :'(

- have uploaded the files and got the list of ones needing chmod'ing when I tried to set up
- changed everything in the list to 755 (including going into the folders and making sure everything was updated)
- but when i click the 'click here' button the same list appears even though all files are 755 now?

also, when i try to connect the ftp i get error "550 failed to change directory"

I'm guessing there's a perfectly simple explanation that I'm just too much of a computer dunce to figure out...

In the actual upload instructions please make it clear on if you need to use ASCII or BINARY - I have seen it stated both ways and did not see it in any official installation instructions. If some files require one or the other please give exact details as this would sure save a lot of posing. Thanks
